Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Ps 31:24 (NIV)
Keep it Still
It's unclear when David wrote this Psalm – Some believe it was after the treachery of Keilah, others believe it was written years later after his son Absalom rebelled against him. Spurgeon writes in Treasury of David, “It is perhaps quite as well that we have no settled season mentioned, or we might have been so busy in applying it to David’s case as to forget its suitability to our own.”
We can all relate to David’s side by side plea for help and praise to God. In the one hand, he is desperate, hurt, mournful, in need of rescue and supply. And in the other, he is praising God for His goodness and faithfulness. We can bring both our praise and pleas to God. He wants all of it, the good the bad, the ugly and the beautiful. Our praise and joy and our cries and heartaches.
Through everything, always remember that God is faithful. Don’t lose yourself in a moment of hardship and become frantic and panicky, forgetting that God is with and for you. You can be sure that He will hold you up when things want to bring you down, and will be your strength when you’re too weak to keep on going.
Panicking is a dangerous emotion. It clouds your judgement and ability to recover from failure, heartbreak and disappointment. It veils your vision when you need to make decisions through challenging circumstances and can stall your progress when walking through fear.
When life throws a curve ball, don’t panic. Take heart.
The God who is in all and through all is with you in all. Don’t thrash around in a fit of panic and terror, although I know it is challenging to stand still amidst an onslaught of fear and heartbreak. That will only keep you from moving forward through whatever it is you're facing. Instead, learn to still your mind, allow the transcendent peace of God to calm your spirit, and take a hold of your heart. Keep it still. Keep it focused on the hope you have in God. And you can join David in saying “Praise the Lord, for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love. He kept me safe when my city (heart) was under attack.” (Ps 31:21)
