…And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. Eph 2:20 (NLT)

CORNERSTONE – PART ONE

At the time Ephesians was written, a cornerstone was the most-important stone in a building. The cornerstone had to be strong enough to support what was built on it, and it had to be precisely laid as every part of the structure was oriented or aligned to it. ‘Cornerstone’ means “at the tip of the angle” and was placed where two walls joined at a right angle. We often think of a cornerstone is terms of holding up the weight of a building, which is true. But the cornerstone also determines the regulation, pattern and form of a building – so the walls meet and the lines are straight… unity.

We also often use this scripture as a picture of the church – but there is so much more to it than just what holds up four walls on a Sunday. We can quickly and easily replace Jesus as our cornerstone with dogma, events, and culture – trying to build upon these things and use them to relate to people. But these things were never designed to be cornerstones – weight bearers and unifiers. Only Jesus can truly hold up the weight of our lives and bring people so diverse together in community. ‘Jesus at the centre of it all.'

Jesus is strong enough to carry the weight of our past and sins, the weight of our future. Jesus alone can carry the whole world, including you… He has us all in mind. When we try and build our lives on culture, or on events, something as small as a slight change in the weather can topple the structure of our lives. But with Jesus as our cornerstone, we can stand strong in the midst of any storm, any tension and discussion, any hardship or differences.

We can remain secure in any season because it's not our circumstances, reputation, or even successes that hold us up and carry the weight of our lives, but Jesus.

Build your life on a foundation capable of carrying the weight of it. Isaiah 28:16 (Amp) says, “Therefore thus says the Lord God, Behold, I am laying in Zion for a foundation a Stone, a tested Stone, a precious Cornerstone of sure foundation; he who believes trusts in, relies on, and adheres to that Stone will not be ashamed or give way…”
