But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. John 15:7 (MSG)

It’s seems kind of weird that the God of all the universe would want us to be at home in Him. I mean He’s the big boss. I remember my first job stacking shelves at a supermarket. The boss was really scary and intimidating. He would call me up to his office and I would literally shake in fear. I definitely didn’t feel at home. That boss led me out of ‘positional leadership’. I did what he said only because of his title. God leads us from a totally different place. His authority is much like a parent with their child. Strong but full of love. Often our earthly experience with authority gives us a filter of how we relate to God. So if it’s been harsh and abusive, that’s how we expect God to deal with us.

Personally, we discipline our children… but we also tell them every day that they are amazing and loved beyond measure. We discipline to help them grow, NOT to help our ego’s or exercise our authority. The difference in those motivations makes all the difference in how they’ll turn out. Whatever your experience with leadership or authority in your life is, know that God wants you to be at home in Him. He’ll treat you like His child but that comes with all the benefits of living in His house! Protection, purpose, provision, passion and preparation (read ‘discipline’). Don’t miss out on the good stuff… get home into His presence…
