REFLECTION AND PRAYER
What does worship mean to you? Where do you feel most connected to God in such a way that he influences your decisions, thoughts and actions?
Maybe it is through songs, “worship music” as some like to call it. “Sing to the Lord a new song.” (Ps 96:1). I’ve experienced so many incredible moments during worship at a church service.
Maybe it's through prayer and meditation. “Be still and know that I am God.” (Ps 46:10). Even more powerful for me (at the moment) than music, has been meditation – learning to still and quiet my mind, empty myself of the busyness of life and the drama of living and just be in his presence. No words, just breath.
Maybe it's through nature. “The heavens declare the glory of God.” (Ps 19:1). Sitting on the beach, a walk in the bush, a starry sky, all pull me into moments of awe and reverence for the Divine.
Maybe it's through surrender: seeking wisdom and truth for a certain situation. Maybe it's through faith: following the leading of God down a road you never even knew was there. Maybe it's through your craft: writing, painting, drawing, dancing, capturing moments, filming, storytelling, science experimenting, researching… giving what’s you as a gift to the world and to God. Maybe it's through how you treat others: kindness, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, turning the other cheek, love, hope…
Worship is life. We all do it, but few of us realise when we are engaged in it and who we are worshipping. Maybe that's why Jesus spoke of water and worship that day when he met the Samaritan woman at the well. Immersion, flow, jumping in, diving deep, nourishing and cleaning, cooling and satisfying… living water and worship: maybe they are inextricably entwined.
Our prayer for you, friend, (and for ourselves – haha!) is that you drink of God's living water, and allow him to continuously quench the thirst of your soul. And remember, it's not so much black and white answers to our questions that satisfy our parched lives. Rather it's his presence that brings hope and nourishment to our hearts. Worship him in spirit and in truth – be awake and aware. Share your life and your story, hold nothing back. Know that God is not intimidated by your darkness; he lights it up and makes it his home.
Worship is a holy collaboration between the divine and you. Do it with your whole heart and life.
“Lift up a great shout of joy to the Lord!
Go ahead and do it—everyone, everywhere!
As you serve him, be glad and worship him.
Sing your way into his presence with joy!
And realize what this really means—we have
the privilege of worshiping the Lord, our God.
For he is our Creator and now we belong to Him.
We are the people of his pleasure.
You can pass through his open gates
with the password of praise.
Come right into his presence with thanksgiving.
Come bring your thank-offering to him
and affectionately bless his beautiful name!
For the Lord is always good and ready to receive you.
He’s so loving that it will amaze you—
So kind that it will astound you!
And he is famous for his faithfulness toward all.
Everyone knows our God can be trusted,
for he keeps his promises to every generation!”
Psalm 100.
