Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (Matt 5:6)
In many ways in this life, we desire to be filled. Filled with provision, hope, healing, purpose, acceptance, peace and identity. When we're not careful we can seek to be filled from the wrong places. Places that don't bring a lasting or healthy sense of these needs. This passage starts off with saying “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness”. At first reading, and if we skim over it, we may receive that as “Blessed are those who do the right thing…” but it's far from our own doing that we get any kind of righteousness in God's eyes. What it's trying to say is “blessed are those that hunger and thirst for JESUS, for they will be filled”.
Jesus is our righteousness. He's a our right-standing in God's eyes. When you chase after Jesus, when you direct your hunger and thirst toward Him, rather than turning to counterfeit versions of being filled (fulfilling your flesh and making life happen in your own strength) you truly get filled. Filled with peace and hope…a sense of “everything's going to be OK”. Filled with purpose and identity…”I know what I'm on this planet for”. Filled with healing and provision…”God will supply all my needs”. And filled with acceptance…”I know that my worth comes from the value that God places on me and not what others think. I know my past is forgotten and my future secured in Him!” If you fill up a vehicle with the wrong fuel, it'll ruin the engine. If your tanks' empty go get some fuel from Jesus…it's high-octane, long-lasting and never ending! God bless you amazing people today.
Jesus, fill my tank today. No garbage fuel today. Be my fuel filter that does not allow impurities to pass into my engine. Let me run on the good stuff today. Tomorrow when I come back in to get refuled…ask me how my engine ran. Ride on!
