Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Psalm 36:5 (NIV)
When David wrote this Psalm, the highest height he knew was what he saw when he looked straight up – the heavens. When he was describing the love and faithfulness of God, he likened its reach to endlessness of heavens heights. In his time, they didn't have the knowledge we do of space and its limitlessness, but even still, David knew that as for love and faithfulness, there were no limitations, boundaries or ceilings for God.
This is such a stark contrast to our earthly existence which seemingly hems us in. As each generation lives and gains wisdom, we understand more and more of our capacity for learning and exploration. We understand that we have limitations, but we as humans are also built for adaptation and growth. So even though we are limited, the opportunities for us to push back the boundaries of those limitations are endless.
David understood this. He lived in a day and age that, through the lens of centuries and hindsight for us, was incredibly limited as far as technology, human rights, welfare, politics, education, etc. are concerned. But this human condition did not keep him from seeing and knowing that God is not confined to the earth's limitations, but lives in, through and above them.
Breaking the “rules” left, right, front and centre.
Spurgeon describes it as,
“Like the ethereal blue, it encompasses the whole earth, smiling upon universal nature, acting as a canopy for all the creatures of earth, surmounting the loftiest peaks of human provocations, and rising high above the mists of mortal transgression. Clear sky is evermore above, and mercy calmly smiles above the din and smoke of this poor world. Darkness and clouds are but of earth's lower atmospheres: the heavens are evermore serene, and bright with innumerable stars. Divine mercy abides in its vastness of expanse, and matchless patience, all unaltered by the rebellions of man. When we can measure the heavens, then shall we bound the mercy of the Lord.” (Treasury of David Ps 36:5)
Gods faithfulness and love for you (and all) is not hinged to your performance, position, abilities, your sin, ignorance, wisdom, knowledge, failings, successes, what you’ve endured, or your behaviour good and bad.
It is and always bound by his own expansiveness and creative power, which is as high as our limitless and ever reaching heavens and skies.
