He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. (Psalms 147:3 NKJV)
Author Henri Nouwen writes, “When those you love deeply reject you, leave you, or die, your heart will be broken. But that should not hold you back from loving deeply. The pain that comes from deep love makes your love ever more fruitful.” When someone is sick, medical professionals have discovered that even the companionship of an animal, like a dog, aids the healing process. It's intrinsically wired in us to connect and interact with others and it benefits each party as they interact in the relationship. In the account of creation in Genesis, God creates each thing and says “it is good”…until He gets to man. Then He says “it's not good…for man to be alone…” – when a relationship causes us pain, the humanity in us wants to pull back and put up walls to protect. Yes, there are times when you'll need to distance yourself from a person who causes you pain, but don't allow it to distance you from people in general. The very act of relating with others, the giving of yourself, will heal you. That's why God is so desperate to have relationship with us. So desperate that He devised a plan that would seem crazy – sacrificing His Son. See He understands that relationship is healing. Relationship regenerates us and invigorates our souls. That's why this Psalm says “He heals the broken hearted….” Today, determine that no pain will make you shy from relationship…with humanity or The Redeemer. It will restore and heal your broken heart. God bless…
