Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. Isaiah 53:4 (NKJV)
(Part 1 of 2)
Isaiah 53 is an amazing prophecy about the coming Messiah – who He would be and what He would do. And looking back on it from the view point of the cross, it is remarkably accurate.Surely – as sure as the sun rises, Jesus is. He is our friend, our redeemer, healer and saviour. Surely we can trust Him. Surely He is our hope. We can be sure, without any trace of doubt or fear, that He is the Son of God and will do what He says He will do.

Jesus bore our griefs – He shouldered them, transported them, took the weight of them off of us and onto Himself. Many commentators suggest that the word ‘griefs’ is used here in relation to our physical illnesses. Whatever disease, sickness or illness you are facing today, Jesus has already and continues to bear your griefs – shares in them with you, walks with you through them, and is able to heal you.

He also carried and carries our sorrows. The ailments of our heart and mind – the hurt, rejection, fear and worry we experience in our everyday lives. And also mental illness, which is just as real and damaging as physical illness – it needs attention and care, and at times may need medication and rehabilitation. Jesus cares about and feels the sorrows and heartaches that afflict our inner self just as much as He does with our physical griefs.

In short – He cares. About you – all of you, inside and out. And He doesn’t just care as a friend does over a cup of tea who hears our complaints and then can go home and not be affected by them, Jesus takes them on. If He lives in us through the power of His defeat of death on the cross, then what we bear, He bears. He sees, hears and feels it all – the cross melding our lives with His, entwining our spirits eternally.

Don’t live trying to hide these things away from your Saviour. Surely, He went to the cross carrying our griefs and sorrows in order to be able to support us, strengthen us, help us and heal us. Allow Him to today.
