Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. – Vincent Van Gogh.
Sometimes less is more.
The small things can seem trivial and annoying when we’re busy chasing and worshipping the big and great things.
The big success, the big promotions, the big reputations, the big right-place-right-time moments, the big places where we are seen and witnessed and known by many.
We worship those big places and the people who seem to live in them.
But the small? That’s where the sacred begins, in the unseen moments and spaces of our lives:
On the floor with the kids.
Around the table with our friends.
On the front porch with our love.
Writing a letter to a far away friend.
Sitting at the computer typing words no one will ever read.
Sitting with a stranger on the bus.
At the check out buying socks.
Walking on the beach.
Alone in your room.
The “lesser” things in our lives turn out to be what fills them the most. Those big moments and great things happen few and far between and never sustain us like our small homes and lives and hearts do.
And that’s where the tension lies, between the big things and the small things. The ‘secret’ is to hold the tension: hope for more while loving the heck out of the small. Otherwise, we miss it all.
The things we think are small turn out to be big. That moment on stage, that magical day, the promotion, the money, the praise, the accolade, the tragedy: the ‘big’ events happen on top of a foundation of our faithful small things. And it's the small things, the humble day-in-day-out things, that remain.
So maybe it’s time for:
Less hustle and more grace.
Less daydreaming and more presence.
Less TV and more play.
Less hate and more love.
Less Instagram and more beach.
Less money and more time.
Less consuming and more creating.
Less ladder climbing and more community spirit.
Less anger and more laughter.
Less striving and more being.
Less judgment and more acceptance.
Less fear and more hope.
Less plotting personal success and more plotting peace for all.
The list could go on. But today, start small. Live there fully and wholeheartedly. Don’t give in to the idea that it’s the “big” moments that make who you are. You are more than the big moments of your life.
“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” (Van Gogh).
Because in the end, the ‘lesser’ things in our lives become the things that give us more joy.
