Future You – Part 3
If you could write a letter to yourself and post it back to the “1st-January-2015-you” to prepare you for the year ahead, what would you say?
I asked this question to our PocketFuel Instagram community a few days ago, and the response was beautifully varied. Things like “hold on” to “let go!” And then, “leave him and move on” to “you’ll meet him and fall in love.” It's incredible how we all face the same days, the same years, we live under the same sun and stare at the same moon, yet our experiences and lives can be as different from each other as humanly possible…
Instead of sprouting off grand plans and masses of resolutions, I like to use this time of year to reflect on what I’ve learned in the previous months and perhaps where those lessons and experiences can take me, or what they might steer me away from.
SO GO FOR IT, write that letter to yourself. Encourage “2015-you” with what you’ve learned thus far. And when you’re done, take some time to imagine where you want to be in 12 months and what “future-you” might say “to today” you.
What would Mary at the foot of her son's cross have said to her “just-pregnant-with-Jesus” self?
For me, the last 12 months have taught me to live with open hands and an open heart. Open to my neighbour and enemy alike. I’ve learned (some more) to make plans, but not set them in stone – to not become rigid and stubborn in my own predictions of the future. I’ve learned (learning) to be graciously fluid, solid but movable – flexible. So that when my stubborn plans are thwarted I can move forward and through them to the other side.
And just like Mary did the night she found out she was pregnant, I hear the divine whispering new life into my bones. Where will those whispers take me? Where will they take you? God only knows… and if we dare to DO what we can, and BE who we were created to be, we just might find out a little bit more what and who we were made for.
