What did this verse mean to you? How do you find rest?
Alexander Shaia, in his book “Quadratos” suggests that theme recurring through Matthews book is: “How do we move through change?” When I read this verse in light of that theme, it takes on a whole new depth.
Even though change is one of the most natural occurrences in our lives, we stubbornly resist it. We love to hate change. It’s wearisome, burdensome… It can feel heavy and uncertain; take all your energy and sap the joy out of you.
How do you find rest in Jesus when going through change? During chaotic times when everything is up in the air, and the earth shakes beneath your feet? What does it mean to come to him? To join your life with his?
I think it could be different for each for us.
What brings you rest? Where do you feel closest to God? At the beach? On a mountain? In the quiet and stillness or in music and dance? A book? A movie? A walk? A run? Your room, a chair, cooking, cleaning, gardening, writing, painting…
Wherever that place is, go there. Do it now. Run to it.
Close your eyes. Listen. Join in.
Forget about your phone and your to-do’s and your fears and your worries. Or better still, bring them with you, lay them down. Offer them up. Forget about who you're meant to be and who you're trying to be, and instead, just be.
And breathe.
