The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. Ex 14:14 (NLT)
Panic doesn’t do anybody any favours. It creates confusion, promotes hysteria, and cultivates chaos.
When I feel the cold thread of panic weave its way down from my brain to my heart, I know that reason is about to vacate and fear is about to turn up. It's usually the unexpected that invites panic into our lives.
In Exodus 14, Pharaoh had freed the Israelites, they had left Egypt and were at the dead sea waiting to cross. When all of a sudden, Pharaoh and his army turned up – having changed their minds, they wanted to drag the Israelites back into Egypt and slavery. Panic arose. Even though the Israelites had the word of God spoken to them through Moses about the promised land; even though they saw miracle upon miracle, and sign upon sign of God’s sovereignty in Egypt; at that moment, they threw what they ‘knew’ out the window and gave way to panic. I can relate to that.
The unexpected has happened in my life more than once, and more than once, I have forgotten to hold onto the promises of God for my tomorrow. I’ve forgotten His peace and hope, and have allowed panic and fear to take over my body and imagination. It's in these moments that rash decisions are made and hasty words are said. ‘Just stay calm' no mater what situation is causing panic in your life.
Whatever has just ‘popped up’ with fear in its wake, know that the Lord himself will fight for you… In-fact He has already won the battle for your peace through the death and resurrection of Christ. So if panic and fear try to interrupt your day, HOLD ON to the promises of God for your future. HOLD ON to His peace that surpasses all understanding, and KNOW that the Lord is for you and not against you.
