You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Ps 23:5 (NKJV)
PSALM 23 – DAY 5
When in battle, a soldier rarely eats… and if he does, it will be stealthy and quick, not a full meal – not even nourishing, but a speedy bite hastily chewed and swallowed.
Jesus had many enemies and promised us in Mark 13:13 that if He did, we would also. So it should never surprise us that there are those who would oppose us for any and many different reasons.
Unlike the soldier who hastily eats in battle, God not only gives us food but prepares – gathers, cooks, sets out, places – not just a meal, but the whole table, a feast in the very presence of our opposing party and/or season.
There are two things here:
Firstly: even though we have enemies – trying times, actual people who hate you, circumstances wanting to drag you down, the devil that wants to condemn you – there is no need to be afraid, God is with you. And He Reigns. He brings peace to your life that can cause you to sit down, eat, be nourished and filled even in the presence of your enemies. There is no need to panic or neglect your spiritual hunger. Allow your soul to be fed in the midst of trying circumstance instead of running and burning up all your energy.
Secondly: In Matt 5:44 Christ compels us to love our enemies, and pray for those who persecute us. So why would flee in our enemy's presence? God anoints us with oil, not just so we can get through by the skin of our teeth, but He overflows our life with blessing and His anointing – His power. If we allow Him to anoint us to overflowing while in the presence of our enemies, who knows where that anointing and blessing will overflow to and what story your enemies will have to take back to camp.
Whatever you’re facing today, sit down and enjoy the feast of love and truth prepared for you by God – He will anoint you and empower you to face whatever is before you.
