For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Tim 1:7 (NLT)
PART 2 – Fear Training
Go to PART 1
I mentioned the book “The Art of Mental Training” by D.C. Gonzalez yesterday. He tells the story of training for the Navy in a Helo-Dunker that mimics a helicopter crash in the sea… with the recruits all on board.
In the training, 6 recruits are strapped in, blindfolded and have to navigate their way to an allocated hatch once the mock helicopter comes to rest at the bottom of the pool. They’re instructed to have an anchor point at all times. At least one hand must be holding onto a part of the internal fuselage in order to guide themselves to their allocated hatch.
This type of training emulates a chaotic scene, one in which these sailors are likely to encounter. The idea is that they navigate it by controlling and minimising the fear.
The key to navigating out of chaos is training yourself to stay calm and to use an anchor for a reference point.
Like these recruits, you and I are bound to face situations and circumstances, seasons and periods in which we are gripped by panic and fear. It is inevitable.
To have a ‘spirit of fear’ means that our life is absorbed, consumed and controlled by it.
God has not created us to carry that spirit and if we let fear control us, then navigating our way free is made far more difficult. Like carrying extra unnecessary baggage.
Feeling fear is OK… It is a protection mechanism. But it’s there to help us, not hold us underwater.
Moving past the fear is to recognise that God is with you in every situation… He is the anchor point to help you find your way clear of danger.
The fact that he stands by us, surrounds us and envelops us with his love and power is a picture of divine grace. Perfect peace despite the storm. His calm voice is our gentle guide to freedom.
It reminds me of the story of Jesus sleeping peacefully in a boat being battered by a storm; the disciples in panic-mode while Jesus stays composed.
The anchor was his trust in the Father; the knowledge of who he was connected to.
When chaos, turmoil and tragedy strike, feel the fear and allow it to remind you that there is an anchor that leads you to safety. Still yourself and listen. It’s going to be dark and the craziness will try to envelope you. But refuse to let fear take control of you, instead secure yourself to his presence.
His gentle whisper will guide you home like a light.
