If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

When I was little girl and would hide things in my heart that I knew I needed to confess, I would always feel guilt, shame and fear creeping in with it, holding it there, making it a secret I held onto tightly until it was forced from me by an authoritative figure. Fear makes us hold onto all sorts of negative emotions and ideas, false beliefs and doubts too. It wants us to keep things in the dark, hidden, festering, rotting… Often the way I was treated when I did confess, did nothing but confirm my ‘fears' and thoughts about what I had done and the situation it had plunged me into.

But not with Jesus. I have learnt, slowly and painfully, over the years that more damage is done by holding onto the affliction of sin, than confessing our misgivings to Father God. Unlike some earthly authoritative figures – not all, just some – Father God actually loves confession. He yearns for it, waits for it, dreams of it… Relationship is His number one priority, and all that hiding our sins does, is keeps us from relationship with Him, throwing it off, creating a divide. The moment we confess what's going on in our hearts and lives I imagine He sighs with relief and smiles confidently to Himself knowing full well that He is well able and equipped to deal with, handle, forgive and redeem ANYTHING we confess. The fact that He is indeed God Almighty and Saviour of the universe, deems it so. He is faithful – constant, steady, consistent and unwavering to forgive and redeem… and just – guided by truth. That truth being that it is by grace, through faith that we are saved, covered and justified by the blood of Christ.

We can come as we are to God, confess our sins and be empowered to deal with the circumstances they have left us in, by our faithful and just Saviour. Love you guys…
