And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him. Heb 11:6 (NLT)
Experience and Faith
I first saw him during the first song. I was playing keyboard in church, and he walked in through the back door. Late. Tall. Wearing a tan leather jacket. Short blonde hair. Eyes blue and wide.
15 years, a wedding, an interstate move and two kids later he is still as wide-eyed as ever (although the hair may be missing. Don’t tell him I told you that). We’ve faced so many different seasons and circumstances, good and bad. And still sometimes I look at him and realise that there is still more to discover. As we go through different seasons, different challenges and joys, I see him from different perspectives, revealing parts of him I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. And vice-versa. Depth of relationship takes time, experience, and faith. To grow together is the commitment to seek each other diligently. Pursue, question, learn and grow. Day by day.
When we first discover God and encounter the divine, and when we begin to have an unfolding revelation of his love, it is just that – unfolding. We don’t instantly get all of the infinite downloaded into our hearts and psyche along with the capacity to understand and process all the data and information about him in a single moment. Our understanding and depth of relationship with God grows day by day, experience by experience, by faith and seeking.
It’s our faith in God that drives us to seek Him out. I don’t believe that everything we face comes directly from God. But I do believe that through everything we face, as we seek him in the midst of the season, we will find God in ways we would never have otherwise. God has more of Himself to reveal to us and express through us during every season of our lives. There are things to learn and find out about him and the life and others and love and peace and joy and faith… that could be never be done unless we were to dig through whatever field life has thrown us into.
Faith is a journey, not a destination. It doesn’t demand that we put aside our cognitive abilities, or initiative and inquisitive natures. It is, rather, quite the opposite. Faith asks, faith seeks, and faith knocks through everything that comes our way. It looks beyond the door of the material and the here and now and into the realm of the infinite and the divine. It has great expectations of hope and goodness. It seeks, studies, participates, has a go, and keeps moving forward, searching for ways to journey down the path of God’s will and purpose.
Wherever you are, keep on seeking. There is more to know, more to experience, more of God to be revealed and expressed in you yet. And this season you’re in now, have faith that God is right there with you encouraging you in your seeking to find him. You might see something you’ve never seen before.
And just as my marriage is only 15 years in with (god willing) many more to go, each season we face together is an opportunity to know each other more deeply and intimately than before. Don’t be afraid of the unknown. When faced with it, keep your eyes up, your heart open and your mind attentive. You never know what you might learn.
Seek diligently.
