“Kings and those with great authority in this world rule oppressively over their subjects, like tyrants. But this is not your calling. You will lead by a completely different model. The greatest one among you will live as the one who is called to serve others, because the greatest honor and authority is reserved for the one with the heart of a servant. For even the Son of Man did not come expecting to be served by everyone, but to serve everyone, and to give his life in exchange for the salvation of many.” Matt 20:25-28.
In the search for significance, you’ll find more of it in humble moments of generous service to others than in the grand seasons of wealth and prominence.
Fame and fortune are great, and some of you will experience that.
Career success and achievement are great, and some of you will experience that.
Being the best of the best means that you’ve worked hard and have been dedicated to your craft, and some of you will experience that.
But none of these things make you significant. None of these things will bring you fulfilment in and of themselves. In fact, if you chase after these things at the expense of loving yourself and others, meaningful living will always seem just out of reach.
“For even if you were to gain all the wealth and power of this world with everything it could offer you—at the cost of your own life—what good would that be? And what could be more valuable to you than your own soul?” Matthew 16:26.
True meaning, significance and value are found in the moments where you love and learn to be loved. Real authority and honour doesn’t come with titles or positions of leadership but is reserved for those who serve others. Not like a slave who is held against their will and made to do their masters bidding. But those who serve willingly. Who sacrifice their pride, sometimes their money and time, sometimes their fame and fortune, to lift others up.
Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
Want to experience true success? Want to be significant? Want to achieve something extraordinary? Love. Care. Be tender and kind. Be courageously generous and aggressively compassionate. Humility and vulnerability – that's where everyday, normal miracles happen.
Jesus did not come into the world as a ruler or a king. He didn’t take up a position or title of authority. He didn’t flex his supernatural powers or boast of his cosmic abilities. He didn’t vanquish his foes with violence or domination. He “did not come expecting to be served by everyone, but to serve everyone, and to give his life in exchange for the salvation of many.” Matt 20:28.
He found his value and significance and calling in the service of others.
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” Matt 16:25.
