Love God with every passion of your heart… Matthew 22:37 (TPT)
Every Passion of Your Heart – Start With Love Series – Part 2
Jesus said the highest law is that we are to love:
“…God with every passion of your heart, with all the energy of your being, and with every thought that is within you.’ And the second is like it in importance: ‘You must love your friend in the same way you love yourself.’” (Matt 22:37-40)
How do we love God?
Oh, that’s easy (note sarcasm):
With every passion of our heart. With all the energy of our being. With every thought that is inside of us.
Some would say that to love God is to obey God. Others would say that it’s to worship God. More still would say that we love God by doing everything for God.
I get those sentiments, but when I’m planning my life and writing goals and making decisions; or when I’m broken and tired and in need or repair; or when I’m in the thick of things going through the motions; those ideas are highly impractical.
How DO you love God?
It all comes down to what we believe God is, and how we believe God is. And while most of us reading this hold to a Christian faith tradition, that might look different from person to person.
So, start with Love.
John said that “God is love.” (1 John 4:8).
How do you love ‘love' itself?
You can try obeying; you can try pleasing; you can trying buying God off with good behavior and spiritual favors… but really to love ‘love' itself is to make love the center of your life. Which is easy to type, but takes courage to live.
Frederick Buechner said: “God cannot be expressed but only experienced.”
We love God by loving. By experiencing the flow of receiving and giving love. Beyond obedience, beyond sacrifice, and behavior, and do-gooding, success, and glory, and worship, and praise…
We love God by making love the first thing.
