These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever. 2 Cor 4:17-18 (MSG)

PART 5 – Eternal Things

Go to  PART 1  | PART 2  |  PART 3  |  PART 4

Seasons come and go. As does happiness, pain, sorrow and laughter. Throughout our lives, we will experience so many different things… tragedy and blessing, pain and joy, devastation and hilarity… things that are polar opposites but are all part of our human experience. How do we maintain our sense of self through it all? Our sense of God, hope, and purpose?

Although seasons change, some things remain constant. Faith, hope, and love – the things that pertain to the unseen realms of our realities. You can’t taste, touch or see them, but you can feel them with your heart and soul. They are there in merriment, and in deep darkness.

Maybe, instead of chasing a life of constant circumstances and certainties in the physical, maybe we should focus our efforts elsewhere. After all, ‘stuff' is static. It doesn’t live and die, it doesn’t comfort and pray… it just observes. Our stuff does nothing more than just sit through our lives being impacted by our choices and geography.

But the meat of life, what's at the heart of it, what has the potential to unite us or destroy us, the health of our spirits, the condition of our hearts, that's what should have our attention.

It’s difficult when we face hardship, horrific when we are treated unfairly, heartbreaking to watch those we love be in great pain. But through everything we experience, one thing remains. One thing makes all the difference.

Love.

God's love for us, our love for him, and our love for each other. It's this trinity of love that can hold us up through any circumstance, celebrate with us through every trial and that lives beyond death.

In his book ‘The Eternal Now’, Paul Tillich wrote,

“Nothing truly real is forgotten eternally because everything real comes from eternity and goes to eternity.”

So keep it real, make it simple, see through the highs and lows to the real beauty of it all: God, us, others and the love that connects us all.
