And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. – Matt 18:5 (NIV)
It's Day 4 of #CompassionWeek and obviously most of the scriptures this week focus around the poor and needy and children…which is exactly who God wants us to focus on as Christians. It's who His father-heart aches for to look after and protect. It's interesting in Matt 25:40 Jesus says “Whatever you did for the least of these…you did for me” and in this passage (Matt 18:5) He says “whoever welcomes a child…welcomes me”. What He's really saying is “If you love me then love the poor, help the needy and protect our children”. Children especially need nurturing and protecting. They need the guidance, love and security that mature adults provide them with and regardless of whether we are their parents or not we need to take on the responsibility of protecting them, physically emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Like the old adage says “It takes a village to raise a child.”. There's nothing quite like a community to provide children with all those needs and we need to fight for and stay committed to keeping community strong so that our children have the best opportunity to grow up healthy in all those areas. This is why Church is so brilliant. It fosters and encourages healthy relationships among our children. It provides opportunity for people with different strengths and gifting to impart into their lives. Today when you look at a child, don't just say “how cute” but feel the weight of responsibility to contribute into it's life. And if you haven't already, please consider sponsoring a child. You have the power and resource to change a life…don't allow that potential to stay dormant. Have a brilliant day…We love you guys!
