Doing Good – The Making A Difference Series – Part 5

You were born to make a difference.

Perhaps you’ll be an advocate and stand up for those with no voice of their own.
Perhaps you’ll right policy, or be involved in government.
Perhaps you’ll mend bodies in a hospital, or souls in an office.
Perhaps you’ll inspire a generation, or the people in your street.
Maybe you’ll make a difference in your parent's life, or your brothers, or your neighbors.
Maybe you’ll be a parent. (the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world?)
Maybe you’ll work at the local supermarket, or pet store, or movie theater.
Maybe you’ll spend years at university, maybe you’ll finish high school early.

It all belongs.

Who knows what you will do, except this one thing: how you live your life will leave an imprint. It doesn’t matter how big or small that imprint is. In proportion to time and history, even a mark that we would consider to be enormous would, by comparison, be little. Here’s the thing: you were born to make a difference, but not on your own. It’s our collective efforts that matter. Us, side by side, shoulder to shoulder, doing what we can, spurring each other on.

Sometimes, it’s our willingness to do the best we can in the small, mundane, unseen areas of life that propel us forward.

Sometimes it can feel as if the wind is at our back, and it's all smooth sailing past sunset.

Sometimes.

Other times, it feels like we're up against it all, the wind pushing and pulling at us; our momentum stopped dead in its tracks.

It's in those times that the question “what do you want to do with your life” becomes important, in the sense of the idea that “this too shall pass,” and you will see better times. Will we learn, or will we shrink back? In the unseen transformations of our inner lives, grace carries us through, until we come out the other side refined, humbled and a little wiser.

It’s all a part of it. We transform our world by embracing our own transformations, and doing it loud, in community, with others. And them with us. We are endless works in progress, ever and always “heaven to earth” conduits.

Sometimes making a difference is a thrill, an ego boost and fulfilling. Other times, it's just plain hard, and it can seem the fruits of our efforts rot before they can be seen.

Persist. It matters.

Don’t give up. Keep on living awake, aware and alive. Sleep when you need to. Rest your heart and spirit. Rejoice in the good, grieve in the sorrow. Find safe places to share your hard truths and ask your scary questions. Just keep on moving. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Gal 6:9 NIV).

And perhaps, when we come to our last days, by the grace of God we’ll be able to say that in some small and beautiful way, the world will never be the same.

And you were changed by it, all for the better.
