So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Matt 10:31 (NLT)

As their Rabbi and teacher, Jesus gathered his disciples together and charged them with their next assignment. He gave them his “authority” to heal the sick, cast out demons, raise the dead and give freely to those in need. It was time for them to go out on their own. It was one of those conversations when you’re on the edge of something new and scary and great – full of excitement, anticipation, and maybe even a little fear. Jesus warned them that it wouldn’t be easy, and he encouraged them not to get blindsided by any opposition they face. No matter what, it would all be an opportunity for the Kingdom of God to leak into the world, situation by situation, and impact the lives of those involved.

It reminded me of the show “Friday Night Lights” and the pep talks Coach Taylor would give his underdog team right before a championship match. Ha! A rallying, preparing, ‘go-get-em, you can do it, now is your time’ kind of talk.

You know those moments… right before an important sporting match? Or the moment you need to make a major life decision? Perhaps your fist time on stage, or a job interview, or before a big test? It’s the moment you hear purpose whispering in your ear and the ‘call’ tugging at your heart. You know something important is about to happen that could change your life, resonance swells within you and the ‘unknown’ pumps adrenaline through your body.

Fear causes us to hesitate when faced with the unknown. “What if I fall? What if I fail? What if I get hurt? What if we lose?” – all questions that hold us back and keep us from living in the moment and stepping out in faith.

Here’s a question for you, “What if you fly?”

Jesus says in V28-30 (MSG)

“Don’t be bluffed into silence by the threats of bullies. There’s nothing they can do to your soul, your core being. Save your fear for God, who holds your entire life—body and soul—in his hands. What’s the price of a pet canary? Some loose change, right? And God cares what happens to it even more than you do. He pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail—even numbering the hairs on your head! So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk. You’re worth more than a million canaries…”

When the divine knitted your form in your mother's womb, he wove himself into you, he used threads of purpose and skill and destiny that you would one day discover as you live your life. On the precipice of discovering your purpose and stepping out in faith, when fear rears its ugly head and intimidates you from stepping out and giving this moment all you’ve got, stand your sacred ground! Don’t give into it. Remember who you are and whose you are. A human being housing the infinite and divine, designed for moments such as these…

And as you abandon all else to be involved in the very purpose you were born for, you will find more life than you ever imagined.

You are worth more. More than fear, more than hesitation, more than worry… So don’t be afraid – whether you fail or succeed, your value remains. And there is always tomorrow.
