My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ. Col 2:2 (NIV)
Part 1 – Different but the Same
When you weave something together, you take different strands of thread or wool and intertwine them in such a way that together they create something beautiful. These strands don’t have to be the same colour, or type or weight of thread… in fact, sometimes variance is the point, being exactly what the piece needs, making it beautiful not in perfection but in creativity and inclusion. It’s often the thread – or piece, or word, idea, chord, colour etc – that you were sure would not fit into the picture that turns out to be the very thing the artwork needs.
Jesus introduced a “new way.” The one he talked about while ministering on earth, the one he was murdered over, the one that saw him rise from dead, is the way of love. We talk about it often – This new way is an unfolding discussion… a journey… a story in and of itself that we pursue and unearth every day. I don’t believe we can ever arrive at the fulness of knowledge when it comes to God – there will always be more to discover, to learn, to behold and uncover.
Different seasons and situations in life show different facets and sides of the divine that we may have never seen had we not been at that moment at that time experiencing that particular thing… So explore, ask questions, dig deep, go on adventures of theology and the word. In your seeking, love. In your questioning, love. It’s not our commonality that unites us anyway, it’s our love. Our love for one another, our love for ourselves, and our love for God. Fulfilling Jesus command, “Love God with all your heart and soul and mind strength, and love your neighbour as yourself.”
When watching a film, we’re not overly moved to encouragement by violence, abuse, heartache or terror. What fills our heart with warmth are the moments of connection experienced by characters no matter what life throws at them. It's often under extreme pressure that we see sworn enemies become kindred, hatred turn to companionship and differences fall flat making room for hope to fill the space between the once separated.
Unity isn’t all the strands in a weave looking the same. That's boring. There’s not an ounce of the miraculous in that… but take different coloured strands, ones from different backgrounds and experiences, ones that feel different and display new colours and ideas, and add these to other strands that look different… And not just add them but unite them. Glory not in their individual separateness, but in their unique connectedness, and you see something truly divine.

I hope you don’t mind, but I’m sharing this with in my daily devotional I write. This fits so perfectly with what’s going on in Charleston, SC recently. Let’s put our blinders on to color, race, segregation and divinity, and start treating our brothers and sisters in Christ for what they are… family.
