Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes. Prov 19:2 (NLT)
Details and Dramas
Ever made an ill-informed decision? Or gone to do something without checking the details first?
I’ve turned up to appointments a week early, dumped ingredients into a dish that I’m “pretty sure” belong, making the meals uneatable, bought clothing and appliances without trying them on or researching if I’ll use them first, and more. But perhaps what I'm known most for in my family is hearing a sentence of something and creating a whole novel of a story out of it. One day at college, I received a text message from my mother that read “Your brother has been in a car accident.” That's all the message said. And from those 8 little words, I had created a whole scene and situation in my mind. It only took me a few moments to jump from conclusion to conclusion, and I had convinced myself that my brother had lost his life in this accident and that I would have to catch the earliest flight home, console my mother, calm my father, cook food, plan the funeral, write the eulogy and get my assignment in by Friday. Of course, my mother messaged me five minutes later to tell me that my brother was fine.
I had the eulogy half done.
My Grandfather used to say “the devil is in the details.” It doesn't mean that Satan or evilness lives within details, so details are bad. It means that people often overlook the details in all kinds of things – house buying, matchmaking, food preparing, holiday finding, credit card applying, instructions, assignments, creativity, budgeting etc. etc. and etc for days – and it's overlooking these details that can be the undoing of relationships and circumstances.
Pay attention to details. The Message Bible says, “Haste makes waste…” What a great line to memorise and recite. Write down the time of that appointment, read ALL the instructions, research that appliance, read the fine print on your insurance policy, don’t assume to know the full story from a short soundbite. You’ll save time, energy and money by valuing detail.
In terms of people – don’t be hasty with others… don’t assume the worst, don’t let threads of gossip paint whole pictures, don’t let one bad day ruin a lifetime of friendship, don’t let a challenging season destroy a marriage, don’t make quick judgements on people with long term heartaches… look into hearts and eyes, look for the why, the detail, the story… take the time. It will make all the difference for you and others.
