He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters… Ps 23:2 (NKJV)

PSALM 23 – DAY 2

Here we see God in two ways…
The God who gives us rest in the rich green pastures of His truth, where we meditate on His word, are renewed by the stability of His love and are fed by His fresh wisdom. Our physical situations may look nothing like a lovely green meadow with uninterrupted peace, but the God of the impossible causes us to rest in His wealth of love, grace and strength no matter what the season is.

In these times, it is up to us to glean, lean into, contemplate and digest all that He has for us. Notice the words “He makes me…” We place so much emphasis on activity that I think sometimes we neglect the needful season of rest and renewal. Contemplation and realignment.

David is expressing here the necessity of rest in God – how much we need to lie down in His green, fresh, and alive wisdom and truth. When you allow God to lead your life, He will lead you into seasons of both rest and activity – they may happen simultaneously, at different times of life, or even just different times of the day… But it is needful for us to feast on His rest.

Then God leads – action, activity, productivity, moving forward, journey… He leads us ever down the road of His purpose and design for us. But it is a road marked with peace.

Still water denotes peace and tranquility – a water that runs deep and holds much. Personally, we live in-between a lake and the ocean, and on windless days, both bodies of water are magnificent in their stillness.
Even through seasons of activity, where God is leading you, not laying you down, His peace marks the way. The peace that surpasses all understanding is not usurped or corrupted by situation or circumstance.

God wants us to contemplate and activate – it's not all of one and none of the other. He is the God of both rest and activity. He never drives us, but rather leads us through both seasons.
Learn not to resist either element, but trust in God and follow where He leads.
