He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. Ps 18:33

Climb Every Mountain

This Psalm is reflected in one of my favourite scriptures found in Hab 3:19 (AMP)

“The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and will make me to walk, not to stand still in terror, but to walk and make spiritual progress upon my high places of trouble, suffering, or responsibility”

Have you seen mountains, at least in pictures, that are sharp, rocky, incredibly steep, and look almost impossible to climb? Yet, those mountains seem to have tiny trails no wider than a few inches that wind up and around them. A hind is a female deer that lives in mountains such as these. As they climb those impossible treks, their back feet step in exactly the same place that their front feet stepped in moments before. It is the most sure-footed, focused and agile mountain animal. And the only animal that can scale mountains such as these.

When David and Habakkuk talked about God causing them to be as surefooted as a deer (or hind), they weren’t being abstract. They were deliberately making a comparison to how a deer climbs these mountains of difficulty and how God can infuse us with strength in order to face difficult situations. However, notice that they both still used a picture of a deer climbing the mountain? God did not miraculously pick the deer up at the bottom and carry it to the top; He gave IT the ability and skills to climb the mountain.

God is our strength, and he can both teach us and cause us to be sure-footed, agile and focused up the most difficult, harsh and rocky mountains. We so often look for an instant miracle, when sometimes the miracle happens in the learning, the climbing… in discovering that with God, we can ‘overcome’ all things. Bringing our senses and bodies into submission and stepping out in faith is a daily miracle we can all participate in.

After the ‘walking up’ is complete, we can stand on the peak and realise what it is to be an ‘overcomer' and take in the grand and gracious view of God’s promises fulfilled.
