Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Gal 6:2 (NIV)

A few months back, I was at the grocery store with my two kids (2 and 5) with enough food in the trolley to feed an army (so it seemed). Anyone who has kids and has experienced grocery shopping wth them in tow, can understand that I was not in a good way by the end of it. I was tearing my hair out, I’d developed a twitch, and all I wanted to do was lock myself in my bedroom.

Alone. (A little dramatic, but I’m painting a picture here… ha!)

It had been a stressful and overwhelming day and by the time I was packing my groceries into my trolley, I was ready to “lose it.” Whatever ‘it’ is…

There was a lovely mature couple behind me in the line, and at first I thought my vivacious kids and my huge shop was annoying them. I tried to hurry through so they could have their turn. But when the gentleman saw me struggling with my kids and groceries, without saying a word, he started to pack my trolley for me. It was like finding water in the middle of the desert. His wife looked me and said, “We’ve been there and you are doing a great job. You go on and have a nice day now.”

To carry each other’s burdens can be as easy as that. Picking up a load that is too heavy for another to carry. And according to Paul, it’s actually a personal responsibility we have towards others… it’s how we fulfil the law of Christ.

WOAH!

Think about that for a second. Doing the will of God is more about WHO you are than WHAT you do. We get so caught up on careers and influence and performance; getting it right, ticking all the boxes, getting our behaviour approved by others…

We quote this scripture a lot, but Matt 22:36-39 says,

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”

If you see someone with a load that's hard to carry, give them a hand. Whether it’s a struggling mum at the supermarket or a dear friend experiencing deep tragedy. Lift them up, shoulder their burden, show them that they're not alone.

Step into that sacred place of heavy lifting. If you're not sure how, just start with buying a coffee, making a cup of tea, or giving a reassuring smile or hug, praying with them, or just physically being there… That’s how you fulfil the law of Christ.
