Receive help.
Are you guilty of saying, ‘No thanks, I’ve got this” a million times?
I am. Even during times of immense stress and pressure, I have a hard time accepting help. “I can do it all and on my own, thank you!” I really enjoy being the helper, but I have a hard time accepting help.
Here’s the thing: helping each other is how this whole thing works. God designed us, and everything, to exist by working together. Not one thing on this created earth can exist in isolation. Community and togetherness foster life and progress. And helping each other out, both giving and receiving it, is how it’s done.
I’m not sure why and how receiving help became such a shameful thing in our society. It’s a deeply spiritual and sacred practice that we need to reclaim.
“Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Carry each other's burdens, and so complete Christ’s law. If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived.” Gal 6:2-3 (MSG).
The opposite is also true: Allow others to share your burden. Let them creatively restore you. Whether it’s with the washing, dishes after dinner, a project, an illness, a tragedy, a correction. If you think you are too good (or too bad) to be helped, you are “badly deceived.”
PRACTICE:
Receive help. Say yes to the very next person who offers you help. We need each other, you and I. There’s nothing shameful about that. In fact, it is good (Tôv… from yesterday), and how it’s supposed to be.
