Vocation – Part 2

What makes you come alive? What ignites passion in your soul?

Before you or I had any material form, God had already designed us. We already had a purpose and the grace for us to fulfil that purpose had already been given to us. It was all prepared well in advance.

By the time we were “knit together in our mother's womb” as Psalm 139 so poetically describes, God wasn’t at a loss as to what to “put in us…” He was THE Creator with a plan. He wove things into your soul that he designed and purposed for you to have. He said to Jeremiah,

“Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations—that’s what I had in mind for you.” Jer 1:5 (MSG).

The things that naturally excite you are hard wired into you for a reason. For me, amazing films make me happy for days, I could LIVE in a bookstore, I love being at home on my own… A beautiful, well-told story makes my blood warm and zingy… I know my overall purpose has something to do with stories. But within the pursuit of storytelling as a vocation, I experience lots of nuances and moments of purpose along the way.

For my husband Jesse, he loves marketing and science; he’s a deep thinker and a problem solver. He LOVES technology and computers… so it makes sense that he’s pursuing those things as a vocation.

God put them within us and its up to us to steward our ‘gifts’ well. It’s up to us to pursue growth and maturity in our skills. We can sit around for a lifetime waiting to hear a loud voice from the heavens tell us what our vocation is, or we can step out in faith into the gifts divinely woven into us.

When trying to figure out what door to walk through to reach your purpose and destiny, knock on the door of the thing you love most first. The worst that can happen is that the door will close. Then knock on the next… and the next… and the next. Praying all the while.

God has called you – the emphasis being on the word ‘YOU’. YOU matter, YOU have purpose, YOU have been called. Called meaning ‘being named by God and designed for meaningful living.‘

God hasn’t ‘called’ you because you are strong, elite, eloquent, smart, handsome, pretty, come from good stock, got perfect grades… He called you because He loves you. The only prerequisite for vocation is that you are loved by God.

And you are.

HE has called YOU and has made you HOLY. And that topic is for tomorrow…
