A capable, intelligent, and virtuous woman — who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels, and her value is far above rubies or pearls. Proverbs 31:10 (AMP)
Buried Treasures
Beautiful gems are not born from luxury, they’re not fashioned by perfection, or wrought by grace. They are birthed in pain, tension and challenge. Buried deep in the earth, covered with dirt and grime, someone has to search hard to find them. By the time these beautiful gems encase in precious metals hit our jewellery stores, it's hard to imagine them in their original home. It's difficult to fathom they there have not always shined perfectly, obviously precious for all to see.
Gemstones come into their own through heat and pressure. And they don’t just appear on the surface… they are rare, buried deep, hidden, and hard to find.
Significance is not actualised the moment you are ’seen’ or (metaphorically) put on display. A buried ruby is still a ruby, even when no one knows where it lies.
You are more precious than rubies. Even if no one sees it; even if you’re value is undiscovered by others, or even by yourself, it is there. And it’s not your ability to be perfect, to look amazing, to get it right, and all those temporary image-driven things, that make you valuable… but your life – who you are, what you’ve been through, what you’ve done, the pressure you’ve been under, the heartache you’ve endured, the challenges you ride… these things, the sum of all that you are – the good, the bad, the ugly – are what makes you valuable. Your whole story, not just the wonderful parts. Our humanity is beautiful: floored yet redeemed, sinner yet saint, fallen yet risen… buried deep and covered in the muck and mess of life, but still a ruby through and through.
Who do you think sees the real value of a ruby? The geologist who finds it in its natural state? Or the consumer who bargains for it at the jewellery store?
For us, the analogy of gemstones doesn’t quite extend to the jewellery store. Except perhaps for the verse found in Matthew 16, “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?” Your significance is not granted due to fame and fortune, influence and reputation. You are, therefore, you are significant. Whether found or still buried deep.
Your beautiful soul… is the one that Christ, in his great love went in search for. The seasons of pressure are difficult to be sure but embrace the quality they bring out in you. Know that through it all, your value is not determined by who sees you, but by who knows you fully; imperfections, bruises, wounds and all.
After all, you are far more precious than all the rubies in the world.
