And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. Luke 1:31 (NLT)
Birth of a Miracle – Part 1
Not yet married to Joseph, a teenage girl living in suburbia, ordinary and normal – Mary was paid a visit by an angel who told her of a preposterous plan. A crazy, impossible, ludicrous, ridiculous, inconceivable (literally) plan. A real “face palmer.” She was to give birth to the saviour of the universe, the long awaited one, the son of God, Messiah. AND she was to fall pregnant without ever having ‘been' with a man. A virgin birth.
Impossible.
But this wasn’t the only impossibility Mary was facing.
Being unmarried and pregnant put Mary in a very precarious position. She would have to explain everything to Joseph and hope that he would believe and trust her. Joseph had every right (culturally) to reject Mary, and her family had every right (culturally) to evict her from the home. She had very few rights and there was no welfare system… Often unmarried pregnant girls ended up as slaves, exiles, living on the streets and becoming sex workers. If Joseph and Mary’s family weren’t willing to stand by her, she stood to lose her security, her family, and even her baby.
Have you ever wondered why the Divine and all-powerful and holy God chose an unmarried virgin girl who stood to lose so much to carry and birth the saviour of humanity into the world? It’s a mind spin.
It’s a crazy, beautiful, hope-filled wonder.
Which sounds kinda like real life… God working in unexpected ways and places that turn out to be the best of ways and places.
Take a look at your life. What do you see as impossible for you? Don’t just look at the obvious things, but see into the nooks and crannies of your hopes and dreams… the things you’ve stopped believing, the fallout of lost hope. The things that you believe are damaged and lost and gone beyond repair and reprieve.
Take a look at the lives of others… What do you see as impossible for them? What label do you give your neighbour?
God smashed every human idea and concept of what salvation would look like and how it would arrive… it didn’t come wrapped in perfection. It was shrouded in impossibility, shadowed by fear. Birthed in a dirty stable unfit for any earthly king, yet was the perfect place for the infinite manifest to enter the tangible world.
The impossible became tangible, real… possible.
When you wake up on Christmas morning, before you head out to the lounge room to unwrap gifts with excited children or eat breakfast with family, or perhaps be confronted by what you don’t have and what you may have lost… remember that on the very first Christmas day, a normal girl, who faced impossible odds, gave birth to a miracle.
Jesus.
And at the sound of his name echoes hope across the world to all who would hear it… including you.
