About Benjamin, he said, “Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.” Deut 33:12 (NLT)
Moses had led the Israelites as far as he would through the desert, and in the last days of his life, he declared blessings over the 12 tribes of Israel. The blessing he spoke over the tribe of Benjamin was particularly beautiful. The 12 tribes of Israel were named after the 12 sons of Jacob, Benjamin being the youngest and reportedly the most beloved of his father. The temple in Jerusalem was actually built on the land portioned to the tribe of Benjamin. There is a beautiful picture here…
We can rest secure in God. Have you ever tried to rest while feeling insecure? Whether it be about your physical safety or your internal identity. An insecure ‘rest’ is no rest at all… it’s fitful, full of worry and unsatisfying. But we, the Lord’s beloved, can rest secure – He is with us, He is for us, and as we follow Him, He will lead and guide us into His rest that cannot be shaken or compromised.
God shields His beloved. He is our protector. This doesn’t mean that bad things won’t ever happen. But when they do, the Lord’s beloved have a greater strength to draw from, eternal wisdom to lean on, and everlasting love to stand on. He guards our hearts and minds with His peace.
And the Lord’s beloved are upheld by Him, moment by moment, day by day. When you shoulder something, you take the burden off of it and onto yourself. Christ shouldered us as He carried that cross and was then crucified upon it. He took the weight of the world on His shoulders and rose shouldering healing and redemption for all.
Just as the tribe of Benjamin was beloved of the Lord, so are you… You are His beloved. And just as the temple was built on the Lord’s beloved’s land, Jesus has made His home in our hearts and dwells within us. He’s not a visitor or distant relative. We are His beloved, and He is our personal Lord and Saviour. Involved, present and real. Love you guys.
