Here in Aus it's Valentines Day – a day to celebrate love and your love. There's ‘stuff' everywhere for it… Flowers, roses, jewellery, perfume, chocolate, dinner… It's a big day! We like to ‘hero' beauty and attraction, which is awesome, accept that we often only look at the beauty we can see with our human eyes. 1 Peter 3:4 says “But let it be the inward adorning and beauty of the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, which [is not anxious or wrought up, but] is very precious in the sight of God.” – it speaks of an inner beauty, an inward adorning, the apparel of the heart… Beauty of spirit. I think it's important to take care of our outward appearance – treat yourself with kindness and respect – but no matter what you look like, what you wear, there is an inner appearance which is more precious in the sight of God. Don't miss-interrupt what it means when the scripture talks about a “gentle and peaceful spirit”… It's not saying be timid, or shut down – it's speaking about the condition of the heart. A beautiful heart is one filled with the peace of God, not anxious or fearful, not filled with malice or hatred, not corrupted by dread and worry… But gentle – compassionate and kind, slow to anger, quick to see the heart of a matter and the good in others… Peaceful – filled with faith that no matter what happens today, Jesus already holds our tomorrow. So as you celebrate love and beauty take a moment to tend to the ‘hidden person of the heart'… And be encouraged – you are most beautiful when Christ has full reign in your heart.
