Be strong and courageous and do the work. 1 Chronicles 28:20 (NIV)

One day I’ll have the confidence to:

Ask that person out.
Speak the truth.
Write that book.
Sing that song.
Say I love you.
Say I'm sorry.
Say I forgive you.
Create what only I can.
Apply for that job.
Submit that piece.
Run for office.

One day…

The only trouble being that confidence lives in the figment of our imaginations, always a day ahead of where we are right now. We never really have the confidence to do what we’ve never done before.

But we do have courage.

1 Chronicles 28:20 says:

“Be strong and courageous and do the work.”

Courage is doing the work, showing up, owning our lives and the space we inhabit, even when we’re scared, even when we're unsure how it will all work out.

Don’t buy into the lie that everyone you see who is “making it” has the confidence to put themselves out there, and that is the missing ingredient in your life.

Courage is what you need. And my dear friend, courage is what you already have.

Yep, it's there. Just as Spirit is with you inside each breath you take, so is the courage you need to do things you think you can’t do, but were made to do. As Brené Brown says: “Courage starts by showing up and letting ourselves be seen.” Which doesn’t take any confidence at all, just wild and gracious faith.

Breathe.
Do the work.
Show up.

Confidence will not wait for you. But courage will. It’s ready when you are.
