Asleep On The Job
In this story, there’s a radical storm happening. The disciples, who’d just seen a bunch of cool miracles, are staring fear in the face. From faith to fear in a matter of hours!
Jesus, meanwhile, is sleeping soundly in the boat!
Put yourself in this picture. Imagine and visualise it with me for just one moment.
You’ve just been hanging out with a pretty cool guy. He’s getting quite famous and is renown for doing some pretty amazing stuff and you’re in the inner-circle. You should be chuffed! In fact, you’re feeling a little giddy and blown away that you’re even in His presence.
You jump in His boat with all of your friends and you go for a ride.
All of a sudden you find yourself in a life-threatening situation. Danger is all around and you’re pretty sure that you’re not going to survive. Your life starts to flash before your eyes and you know death is knocking at the door. You can see it, smell it and taste it. You look over and this guy, who is nothing short of Superman, is fast asleep! He’s even got himself a fluffy little cushion to rest His head on!
What!?!
Now this guy you’ve admired and respected is frustrating the life out of you… And He thinks He’s God’s son!
When the storms of life hit us, it can sometimes feel like God is asleep on the job. Peacefully recharging Himself while your life is in utter turmoil. It’s pretty easy to see how people get angry at God and in turn hate Him when everything seems to go against them.
But it’s in those storms where the miracles we’ve witnessed others receive become ours. Those storms reveal God for who He really is, “calmer of the wind and sea” and shows us that He was with us all along.
The impossible moves from the third person to the first person perspective. The story becomes ours to tell and a truth we can’t deny. The divine intrinsically woven into our own apparently-mundane lives.
God is in your boat when the storm hits, He just has a greater sense of peace in His own ability.
But now it’s time for you to get it.
