No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 1 Cor 2:7 (NIV)
I think often, in our Christian circles, regarding God as ‘mysterious' is almost taboo. I know I can be tempted to think that I have “all the answers” about Him just to feel secure about criticism and attacks from people more skeptical of God.
But I think, in a day-and-age filled with spin and hype, being honest is actually refreshing AND more attractive than having all the answers.
It’s OK to say “I don’t know” when someone asks you a question. People can detect when something is awry, so even if we fudge our way through an answer we’re not doing ourselves or God any favours.
I’m not trying to suggest that we should stay uneducated and ignorant. What’s more important than having the right answer at the right time, is expressing our own personal story and how that relates to God and our journey with Him.
Your testimony holds far more weight to someone you connect with than the finer details of the Bible or Christian history. There can be a disconnect with those other facts, but there's a clear and personal connection to you and so your story matters.
Now when you’re faced with a question you can’t answer, take it as a little sign post that says you need to dig deeper for some answers. Make a little reminder for yourself to go away and find out more about that question and some possible answers for it. It means that next time, not only do you have your testimony, but an answer (or maybe many) that will help another person on their journey with God.
Honestly though, how could God be anything but mysterious?
Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Right there, it indicates that we’ll never fully understand the width and breadth of Him.
Isn’t the point of knowing God, about grace for not fully knowing Him anyway?
Big questions and lots to ponder… Go for it!
